Abstract: The production of fuel ethanol in the United States has created a remarkable growth market for corn in the last 10 years. In the 2006/07 marketing year, more than 2.1 billion bushels or 20 percent of the 2006 corn crop is being used for ethanol production. This amount is nearly twice the amount used for ethanol in 2002/03. Industry estimates suggest the ethanol industryƆs consumption of corn will double again in the next two years and more than 4 billion bushels of corn will be needed to satisfy ethanol demand as early as 2009.
