BUILDINGS

"Hockey Arena Scores LEED Points," by Charles Redell, Associate Editor, Sustainable Industries, - describes a hockey arena that is likely to be the first LEED-certified one in the United States, the second in North America. The Showare Center is in Kent, Washington. Among other pluses, it saves impressive amounts of water and energy compared with buildings that just meet code. Additionally, almost all of construction waste was recycled. View this article in Sustainable Industries , March 2009, at http://www.sustainableindustries.com/greenbuilding/39525062.html .

"Turning College Campuses Green," by Carol A. Moore, AIA, LEED AP, Project Executive at Gilbane Building Company, is a three-part article appearing in the March 2009 issue of Building Operating Management:

Part 1: Intelligent Buildings Are Green sets the record straight as far as comparisons between first costs and long-term operations and maintenance costs. It, also, suggests energy savings strategies that should be included in the design of a new building. See it at http://www.facilitiesnet.com/educationalfacilities/article/Intelligent-Buildings-Are-Green--10657 .

Part 2: The Role of Lighting and HVAC Systems in Green Campuses discusses, very briefly, the role of these two systems in holding down a building's life-cycle costs. View it at http://www.facilitiesnet.com/educationalfacilities/article/The-Role-of-Lighting-and-HVAC-Sytems-in-Green-Campuses--10658 .

Part 3: LEED Lessons for Campus gives useful tips, based on projects winning LEED certifications. Read it at http://www.facilitiesnet.com/educationalfacilities/article/LEED-Lessons-for-Campus--10659 .

ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARDS

"Changing the Standards for Energy Efficiency" was authored by Dan Young Dixon, AIA CID, LEED AP, and Director of National Design, Opus Architects & Engineers. It describes the Net-Zero Energy Commercial Building Initiative (CBI), an effort by the U.S. Department of Energy to change the design and construction of commercial buildings so that they will use no more energy than they generate onsite by 2025. See this article in Sustainable Industries, March 2009, at http://www.sustainableindustries.com/energy/38947579.html .

FORECASTING

"EPRI Report Assesses Residential Electricity Feedback Potential" is a March 26, 2009, press release from EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) that announces the availability of a new EPRI report, Assessment of Achievable Potential from Energy Efficiency and Demand Response Programs in the U.S. (2010 - 2030) . GEOTHERMAL

"Paris Digs to Harness Heat," by Nick Hilden, Editorial Intern, Sustainable Industries , explains that 54% of the energy needed by a new neighborhood in Paris' 19th Arrondissement will be from geothermal. See this article in Sustainable Industries, March 2009, at http://www.sustainableindustries.com/energy/39677972.html .

INDUSTRIAL HEATING

"Excelfrax Microporous Insulation - The Solution for the Nonferrous Industry," by Jim Smith, Unifrax I LLC, discusses the advantages of energy-saving microporous insulation in several areas including conduction, convection, and radiation. Industrial Heating , February 2009, at http://www.industrialheating.com/Articles/Feature_Article/BNP_GUID_9-5-2006_A_10000000000000521578 .

LIGHTING

"Retrofitting Office Lighting Controls," authored by Ken Lovorn, PE, President and Chief Engineer, Lovorn Engineering Assoc. Inc, explains various lighting controls options given applicable code. Other issues discussed include controls challenges and how to meet them, the cooperation required among building and systems designers, building owner, building occupants, and rebates and incentives that may be available. Additionally, the interesting sidebar, "Sensor Mishap" is included. See this article in Consulting-Specifying Engineer , February 2009, at http://www.csemag.com/article/CA6637982.html .

STANDARDS

Two articles, the first on the ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 2004, the second on ASHRAE 90.1 2007, appeared in the February 2009 issue of Consulting-Specifying Engineer :

"DOE Adopts 90.1-2004: Standard 90.1-2004 Established as National Reference Standard by DOE" was prepared by Consulting-Specifying Engineer staff. It explains what is required under this standard which addresses efficiency in commercial buildings. See this article at http://www.csemag.com/article/CA6626930.html .

"Saving Energy with 90.1," by Matthew E. Lininger, PE, LEED AP, at GRAEF, explains the implications for the thermal envelope of commercial buildings in ASHRAE 90.1 2007. See this article at http://www.csemag.com/article/CA6637979.html .

SUSTAINABLE MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTS (NEW URBANISM)

"Dead Malls," by Charles Redell, Associate Editor, Sustainable Industries, is a very interesting article about the morphing of centralized shopping in the United States from dedicated malls to mixed-use urban centers. See this article in Sustainable Industries, March 2009, at http://www.sustainableindustries.com/greenbuilding/40449337.html .
