The WSU Energy Program is a self-supporting department within the Extension Service at Washington State University, a public land-grant institution. We work with government agencies, power marketers, utility consortiums, and private businesses and industries on projects that promote energy conservation and development of renewable energy sources.
Our clients and partners include the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection, the Western Area Power Administration, the nonprofit Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, individual utilities and private businesses such as Weyerhaeuser, an international forest products company. Internationally, we currently are working with the World Bank and companies such as the Denmark-based software company Seven Technologies.
Our 60-member staff includes experts in mechanical and industrial engineering, applied building science, distributed generation and renewable energy, backed by a full-service library and our team of research librarians.
Ways to work with us:
- Technical assistance clearinghouses. Clearinghouse sponsors can choose from a menu of services ranging from development and maintenance of information-rich websites, to telephone and e-mail hotlines that allow their customers to call for free, personal, one-on-one energy assistance.
- Consulting. The WSU Energy Program lends its expertise through contracts with other agencies and organizations. For example, a distributed generation specialist from the WSU Energy Program currently is working with the World Bank on an energy district feasibility study in Zakopane, Poland.
- Research partnerships. Combining our expertise with our partners' skills, we work to develop new knowledge and validate promising ideas. With funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, we currently are working with Weyerhaeuser forest products company, the WSU Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory and others on a wall-moisture study.
- Data support services The WSU Energy Program provides data analysis and custom database and software solutions to organizations requiring in depth information about the production and use of energy. WSU Energy Program analysts and software developers specialize in aggregating and analyzing energy use data. We answer policy questions and produce extensive studies about trends in energy production and use.
- Commercial and industrial engineering assessments. Working with utilities, our engineers visit industrial plants to identify cost-effective energy-efficiency improvements.
- Software and publications. Our staff creates and supports software for energy-related applications. Our products include MotorMaster+, for analyzing motor and motor systems efficiency, created with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. Our clients also rely on us to produce credible publications ranging in complexity from tip sheets to technical manuals.
- Speakers and trainers. Our experts are available to provide training and presentations for industries, businesses and utilities on a number of technologies, processes and practices, particularly motor management. We also schedule regular training sessions on building-related topics such as energy code compliance and indoor air quality.
