Lab Study Finds That Residential Cooking Exhaust Hood Performance Varies Widely,"
by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory staff, was published in the Summer 2012 issue of
EETD News (Environmental Energy Technologies Division News). The researchers measured
airflow, noise levels, and the pollutants captured and vented including CO, NOx,
and fine particulates such as soot.
Commercial Glass Façade and Door Systems"
was jointly authored by C.C. Sullivan and Barbara Horwitz-Bennett, and published
in the September 2012 issue of Building Design + Construction.
It is an in-depth article on the topic
and, at the same time, is a Continuing Education (CE) course for which the

Renewable Energy Deployment Provides Replicable Examples of Clean Energy
Projects" is a two-page fact sheet from NREL for DOE as part
of the Integrated Deployment: Communities program. It describes the program as well as
offers "replicable examples" such as district energy in the City of Montpelier
(Vermont), biogas and solar for the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe (Wisconsin),
wind power in Phillips County (Colorado), solar and more at the Sacramento
Municipal Utility District, and net-zero energy at the University of California,
Study for SEE Action Finds Energy Savings from Residential Behavior-Based
Energy-Efficiency Programs," by staff, was published in
the Summer 2012 issue of EETD News (Environmental Energy Technologies Division News). The article describes the
document and explains that it was designed for various professionals and
stakeholders in energy-efficiency programs. The full report is
Evaluation, Measurement, and Verification of Residential Behavior-Based Energy Efficiency
Programs: Issues and Recommendations; it was prepared by A. Todd, E. Stuart,
S. Schiller, and C. Goldman, all of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, for

Brands Illuminates New LEED Certified Atlanta Airport International Terminal"
was written by Neil Egan, Director of Communications, Acuity Brands Lighting; it
appeared in the September 2012 issue of NEMA electroindustry. This is a
review of the lighting installed at the new Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International
Terminal at the Atlanta International Airport. The
terminal achieved Silver LEED Certification with a concentrated effort in
efficient indoor and outdoor lighting and lighting controls.
We Make our Cities Sustainable with Permaculture?"
was written by Sebastian von Holstein and published on September 25, 2012, in
the online Permaculture Magazine. It lists 15 strategies to make cities,
projected soon to be home to a large majority of the world's population,
sustainable and comfortable centers with its own well-managed food supply and
energy and water resources.
Keys to Success in the K-12 School Market,"
by Peter Fabris, Contributing Editor,
Building Design + Construction, is a
seven-Web-page article; it was published in the
September 2012 issue of that
journal. Designs for schools,
whether new construction or remodeling projects with or without additions, are
heavily influenced by changes in teaching methods that reflect a different
understanding of how learning takes place.
Seven "keys" are listed and well-discussed; energy savings are related to
the keys on daylighting and sustainability.
Roof Rack Installation" was written by
Tim Gregorski, Senior Editor, Building Design + Construction; it was carried
in the September 2012 issue of that same journal.
These seven tips will help the installer promote water drainage and
prevent weather-related damage from high winds and the like.

and Power: Will Your Next Power Plant Make Both?"
was written by David G. Daniels, M&M Engineering Associates Inc. Some communities in the U.S. and in
other parts of the world, are now, or soon to be, short of fresh water. Two technologies are employed to
desalinate seawater: seawater reverse osmosis, the technology of choice in the
U.S., and thermal distillation, which is fairly common in large-scale projects
in some other countries. The author
describes both, with examples, but is concerned mainly with thermal
distillation, which uses a power plant's waste heat, as a viable option for this
Conservation Options for Power Generation Facilities"
was authored by Kent D. Zammit, Electric Power Research Institute. Power plants are large users of
freshwater, and water can be in short supply and expensive. The author lists and describes four
strategies for reducing water use in power generation and discusses water
conservation options for both new and existing plants.
